THE PERI-WOUND IS THE WOUND’S MIRROR NOT COSMETICS

Chronic wound pathology is often easiest to read in the surrounding skin
Maceration → exudate quantity/composition not matched by handling
Eczema-like changes → chronic exposure to irritant exudate or products
Induration / fibrosis → long-standing inflammation, lymphatic overload
Callus around DFUs → unaddressed mechanical stress and pressure

The peri-wound is not “cosmetics around the real problem” – it is part of the same biological system, telling us about load, inflammation and fluid management.

Critical thinking:

A “clean” wound bed with angry peri-wound skin is not a stable situation.
Treat peri-wound changes as pathology data, not as decoration.
