In wound care, photos aren’t decoration — they’re data.
As W. Edwards Deming said: “Without data, you’re just another person with an opinion.
When done well, wound images provide objective, comparable evidence of healing over time.
When done poorly, they can mislead clinical decisions.
Best practice to standardize your photos:
✅ Use ambient light (avoid flash → glare/shadows)
✅ Keep a consistent distance (use a ruler/marker for scale)
✅ Shoot perpendicular to the wound bed (consistent angle)
✅ Take 3 views every time: close-up, 2) mid-range, 3) anatomical context
A photo isn’t just a memory — in wound care, it’s a clinical measurement tool.
⚠️ The challenge: privacy.
Smartphones make it easy… and risky. Always obtain informed consent and store images in GDPR/HIPAA-compliant systems — not personal camera rolls.
