The rooster may be famous for waking us up, but its comb has an interesting scientific story of its own

A study evaluating a hyaluronic acid matrix isolated and purified from rooster comb reported that it contained:

67% hyaluronic acid
12% sulphated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), including DS and CS
17% protein, including 10.4% collagen
Water

The study found that this HA matrix showed potential to stimulate several cellular mechanisms and bioactivities in human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) and human epidermal keratinocytes (HEK) that decline with age.

Reported effects included stimulation of cell migration and proliferation, induction of collagen, elastin and GAG synthesis, and protection against ROS-induced DNA damage and ROS production.

The authors suggest that these properties may support the use of this HA matrix in skin-care applications aimed at improving the appearance of aged skin.

So next time you hear a rooster in the morning, you might think of more than just the wake-up call.
