Periwound skin is a healing organ

We optimize the wound bed, and we should: but without periwound stability, edge advancement is fragile.

Periwound integrity can influence:

Edge migration (keratinocyte function)
Contact dermatitis vs “allergy” confusion
Dressing tolerance and frequency of changes
Pain, itching, and patient dropout

Critical thinking:

Don’t just ask ”Is the wound smaller?”, ask:

Is the periwound dry, intact, and comfortable?
Are adhesives/cleansers causing iatrogenic damage?
Are we preventing maceration with the same discipline as infection control?
